Ex-Mass. House Speaker Deserves 12 Years For Bribery: US

Law360, New York (August 24, 2011, 8:36 PM EDT) -- Federal prosecutors asked a Massachusetts judge Wednesday to sentence former state House of Representatives Speaker Salvatore DiMasi to 12 years and seven months in prison for his role in a bribery and kickbacks scheme that helped two software companies win multimillion-dollar government contracts.

The sentence would be the harshest ever imposed in a political corruption case in Massachusetts, according to prosecutors. DiMasi was convicted in June of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and extortion for allegedly using his influence to secure government contracts for Cognos ULC...
