US Slams PG&E Over Fatal Gas Pipe Blast

Law360, New York (August 31, 2011, 2:59 PM EDT) -- Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s installation of defective piping and the utility's lax approach to pipeline safety led to a natural gas pipe explosion in a residential neighborhood in San Bruno, Calif., last September that killed eight people and injured dozens more, federal accident investigators said Monday.

The National Transportation Safety Board slammed PG&E for installing a pipe whose defects would have been visible during its installation six decades ago. The board said PG&E could have prevented the explosion simply by identifying the faulty pipe segments...
