Calif. Data Breach Notifications, Plain And Simple

Law360, New York (September 6, 2011, 11:49 AM EDT) -- Back in 2003, California bill SB 1386 became the United States' first data breach notification law. Eight years later, nearly every other state in the country has adopted their own version of the law. 

In 2009, California State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Atlo, tried to update SB 1386, enacted as California Civil Code section 1798.82, only to have then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger veto the bill.
