USDA To Ban 6 New Strains Of E. Coli In Beef

Law360, New York (September 12, 2011, 7:07 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is planning to ban six new strains of E. coli from domestic or imported ground beef in addition to the well-known strain of the bacteria that is already barred, a meat trade group confirmed Monday.

The USDA told the American Meat Institute it planned to announce the extended ban Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the trade group told Law360. Currently, the agency bans E. coli 0157:H7, which causes food poisoning and can lead to serious diarrhea and kidney damage.
