Chevron Can't Take Ecuador To Arbitration: Judge

Law360, New York (June 20, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- American oil giant ChevronTexaco Corp. cannot force Ecuador and its state-owned petrol company into arbitration in New York, a judge has ruled, putting an end to a long-running fight.

The case stems from a decade-long case initiated in 1993, when a group of indigenous Ecuadorians sued Chevron, demanding that it fund environmental clean up in the area. The case was eventually dismissed.

Chevron then attempted to take Ecuador to arbitration to recover costs from the litigation. Ecuardor, however, sought an injunction, claiming it was not required...
