Lawmakers Want FTC Probe Of Supercookies

Law360, New York (September 27, 2011, 3:55 PM EDT) -- Reps. Joe Barton, R-Texas, and Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., urged the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday to investigate online companies' use of so-called supercookies, which can record personal data without users' knowledge.

While websites routinely install regular cookies that store Internet data, users can easily find and remove those cookies. In contrast, supercookies are hidden, embedded within programs such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, and have the ability to recreate a user's profile even after the deletion of regular cookies.
