Microsoft, Samsung Ink Smartphone Patent Licensing Deal

Law360, New York (September 28, 2011, 9:01 PM EDT) -- Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday that it had entered into a cross-licensing agreement with smartphone maker Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. that allows Samsung to sell Android operating system-based smartphones without fear of patent infringement allegations from the software maker.

Besides allowing the companies access to one another's patent portfolios, the agreement also stipulates that the two technology giants will cooperate in developing and marketing Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system.
