Middleman Can Sell Drivers' DMV Info: 7th Circ.

Law360, New York (September 28, 2011, 8:23 PM EDT) -- The Seventh Circuit on Wednesday affirmed a lower court's ruling that West Publishing Co. could obtain drivers' personal information from motor vehicle departments for the purpose of reselling it to legally authorized parties, rejecting claims from a proposed class of Illinois drivers.

The Driver's Privacy Protection Act allows the disclosure of drivers' personal information for certain uses, and companies can obtain information from state DMVs as long as they resell it to entities for those certain uses, according to a three-judge panel.
