Monitor Needed To Supervise FDNY Hiring: Judge

Law360, New York (October 5, 2011, 7:20 PM EDT) -- A federal judge on Wednesday recommended assigning a monitor to oversee reform of the New York City Fire Department's hiring practices, saying more than 40 years of denying responsibility for racial inequality proved city officials could not be trusted to act on their own.

U.S. District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis' draft remedial order, aimed at remedying decades of alleged hiring discrimination uncovered by the Department of Justice in 2007, would also continue the court's supervision of the city's development of a new entry-level firefighter exam....
