Microsoft, Skype Merger Wins EU Approval

Law360, New York (October 7, 2011, 4:12 PM EDT) -- Europe’s antitrust watchdog on Friday signed off on Microsoft Corp.’s $8.5 billion bid to take over Skype Technologies SA, saying the duo would still face enough stiff competition from fellow web-driven technology giants like Google Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc.

The European Commission's approval was one of the last regulatory hurdles the companies faced, as the Federal Trade Commission gave the deal its blessing in June.
