Enviro Sues SoCal Gas Over Water Contamination

Law360, New York (October 17, 2011, 1:20 PM EDT) -- The Environmental Law Foundation on Thursday accused Southern California Gas Co. of fouling groundwater with carcinogens and chemicals known to cause birth defects by allowing natural gas to leak out of its underground storage facility.

According to ELF's complaint in California state court, SoCal Gas stores natural gas at such a high pressure that it seeps out from the 240-acre storage facility into the large oilfield surrounding it, mixing with toxic chemicals like benzene, toluene and ethylbenzene, known collectively as BTEX.
