Supreme Court To Mull Shell's Liability For Rights Abuses

Law360, New York (October 17, 2011, 2:09 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday that it would hear a petition this term about whether Royal Dutch Shell PLC and other corporations could be held liable for alleged human rights abuses under the Alien Torts Statute.

Relatives of Nigerians killed by the country's military for opposing oil exploration accuse Royal Dutch Shell PLC of aiding the military's human rights abuses, including murder, rape, torture and the destruction of property, according to the petition.
