Consumer Group Targets Verizon Data Sharing In FTC

Law360, Chicago (October 31, 2011, 6:28 PM EDT) -- A public interest group targeted Verizon Wireless in a Federal Trade Commission complaint Friday, alleging the company is engaging in unfair and deceptive trade practices by collecting and distributing its customers' personal information to other companies without their consent.

The Electronic Information Privacy Center's complaint takes aim at an opt-out policy change Verizon unveiled in mid-October, when it said it had started collecting its customers' location data, demographic information, mobile device usage, web addresses and search terms and was disclosing that personal information to third parties...
