Chartis Tries To Shake Tesoro's $30M Cleanup Claims

Law360, New York (November 8, 2011, 3:29 PM EST) -- Chartis Specialty Insurance Co. sued Tesoro Corp. in Texas federal court Monday over $29.6 million in environmental cleanup costs, claiming a $58.5 million settlement between the petroleum refiner and ConocoPhillips does not apply toward a retention in Tesoro's pollution liability policy.

At stake is $9.6 million in current cleanup costs and $20 million in past cleanup costs at Tesoro's Golden Eagle Refinery in Martinez, Calif., as well as all future cleanup costs at the site. Tesoro has maintained those costs are Chartis' responsibility because the refiner...
