Chevron Faces $28M Fine For Oil Spill: Brazil

Law360, New York (November 21, 2011, 1:52 PM EST) -- Brazil will likely fine Chevron Corp. $28 million for an ongoing offshore oil spill, the maximum amount allowable under the country's environmental laws, its minister of the environment told local media on Monday.

Environmental minister Carlos Minc said the government would also seek compensation for damages to the environment and natural resources, and said he believed that Chevron and its drilling partner, Transocean Ltd., should be barred from future drilling in Brazil, according to reports.
