Merck To Pay Nearly $1B To Settle Vioxx Marketing Claims
Law360, New York (November 22, 2011, 5:23 PM EST) -- Drug giant Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. has agreed to pay $950 million to settle criminal charges and civil claims for illegally marketing the painkiller Vioxx for off-label uses and allegedly misleading customers about the safety of the drug, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.
Merck will pay a $321.6 million criminal fine after pleading guilty in Massachusetts federal court to one misdemeanor count of distributing a misbranded drug.
