US Tries To Quash Action Over Guatemala STD Experiments

Law360, New York (January 10, 2012, 4:16 PM EST) -- The U.S. government sought Monday to toss a proposed class action demanding reparations from the U.S. for secretly infecting Guatemalans with sexually transmitted diseases in the 1940s, arguing the government is immune to tort claims arising in foreign countries.

The suit, filed in Washington federal court, claims a predecessor to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services exposed more than 1,300 prisoners, soldiers and psychiatric patients to venereal diseases as part of research on syphilis, gonorrhea and chancroid.
