Cos. Not Liable For After-Sale Parts: Calif. High Court

Law360, Washington (January 13, 2012, 2:36 PM EST) -- California's highest court ruled Thursday that two makers of Navy ship equipment cannot be held liable for harm caused by asbestos-containing components later added to some of their own products, if they did not make the components themselves.

The ruling arose from a wrongful death suit against Crane Co. and Warren Pumps LLC, which made valves and pumps used in Navy warships, over a death allegedly caused by asbestos released from external insulation and internal gaskets and packing in the devices.
