Catholic TV Network Sues US Over Birth Control Mandate

Law360, New York (February 9, 2012, 3:46 PM EST) -- An Alabama-based Catholic television organization on Thursday took aim at a federal health care rule it says violates its First Amendment speech and religious rights by forcing it to fund birth control procedures it finds morally repugnant and actively discourages.

Eternal Word Television Network Inc.’s complaint, filed in Alabama federal court, seeks an order prohibiting the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from enforcing the rule against it and other religious organizations that object to providing insurance coverage for contraceptives, sterilization procedures, and related education...
