Calif. Teams With DOL To Fight Worker Misclassification

Law360, New York (February 10, 2012, 3:47 PM EST) -- California has joined 11 other states in partnering with the U.S. Department of Labor to combat the growing problem of employers shortchanging workers by misclassifying them as independent contractors, the agency announced Thursday.

California entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Labor Department that will guide efforts to reduce worker misclassification. Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Utah and Washington have all signed similar agreements, making the deal with California the 12th of its kind, the department said.
