Ecuadorean Court Rejects Chevron Bid To Escape $18B Verdict

Law360, New York (March 2, 2012, 7:25 PM EST) -- An Ecuadorean court on Thursday shot down an attempt by Chevron Corp. to stop an $18.2 billion environmental damage judgment after an international arbitration tribunal ordered the country’s government to block all attempts to comply with the order.

Chevron had asked the Provincial Court of Justice of Sucumbios to adhere to a Feb. 17 order from a tribunal at the Netherlands-based Permanent Court of Arbitration, which directed Ecuador's judicial, legislative and executive branches to take "all measures necessary" to suspend enforcement of the judgment within the...
