Aussie Antitrust Cop Looks Into Foxtel-Austar Proposal

Law360, New York (March 7, 2012, 2:09 PM EST) -- Australia’s antitrust watchdog has begun market consultation on the proposed $2.7 billion acquisition of Austar United Communications Ltd. by rival subscription television company Foxtel, in order to address competition concerns, the watchdog said Wednesday.

Foxtel is a joint venture of News Corp., Consolidated Media Holdings and Telstra Corp Ltd.

Under Foxtel’s proposal, it will be barred from entering into exclusive content deals to snatch up Internet protocol television rights for a variety of content so that the content will be available to existing and future competitors...
