NY Regulator Blasts Out-Of-Network Health Care Costs

Law360, Washington (March 7, 2012, 6:54 PM EST) -- The New York Department of Financial Services criticized doctors and HMO insurance providers in a report issued Wednesday for saddling state residents with excessive out-of-network health care costs and making it difficult for consumers to comparison shop. 

In many cases, DFS found that consumers aren't alerted that individual doctors or services may not be covered under their insurance plans and are later charged excessive fees for the out-of-network health care elements, according to the survey.
