Commerce GC Urges Cos. To Adopt Privacy Codes

Law360, New York (March 9, 2012, 6:40 PM EST) -- U.S. Department of Commerce general counsel Cameron Kerry attempted Friday to persuade companies to implement upcoming online privacy codes of conduct, characterizing the voluntary standards as a roadmap to avoiding potentially illegal practices.

Adopting voluntary codes that the Obama administration tasked Commerce with establishing through a multi-stakeholder process will provide companies with an avenue to side-stepping the current uncertainty about what constitutes a sufficient privacy policy, Cameron said during a keynote address at the International Association of Privacy Professionals’ annual global privacy summit.
