Securities Class Action Deals See Sharp Decline In 2011

Law360, New York (March 13, 2012, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The number of securities class action settlements and the amount of money they settled for in 2011 hit a 10-year low, although increasingly aggressive regulators and private litigants could soon push those numbers back up, according to a report released Wednesday.

There were 65 court-approved settlements in 2011, a 25 percent decline from 2010 and 35 percent lower than the 10-year average. The total dollar amount also declined by 58 percent, from $3.2 billion in 2010 to $1.4 billion in 2011, according to the report by...
