Senate Approves Measure To Close 'Buy America' Loophole

Law360, New York (March 14, 2012, 1:20 PM EDT) -- The $109 billion transportation bill the Senate passed Wednesday includes a measure that aims to stop the government from evading an obligation to give preference to American-made products for public infrastructure projects that receive federal funds.

The amendment, put forth by Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., specifically targets the practice of splitting a project up into various contracts, then not using federal aid for those contracts that plan to use foreign iron, steel and manufactured goods.
