GOP's Budget Pushes For Medicare Voucher System

Law360, New York (March 20, 2012, 2:28 PM EDT) -- House Republicans on Monday unveiled their proposed 2013 federal budget that includes another attempt to lower Medicare costs by giving seniors subsidies to buy private health insurance, a step both the Obama administration and congressional Democrats have consistently opposed.

The budget proposed by House budget committee chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., would give vouchers to seniors to purchase private or government-run insurance on an exchange starting in 2023. No one currently over the age 55 would be affected.
