Ill. Appeals Court Blocks ComEd Smart-Grid Rate Hike

Law360, New York (March 20, 2012, 9:06 PM EDT) -- An Illinois appeals court on Tuesday overturned an Illinois Commerce Commission ruling that Commonwealth Edison Co. could recoup from customers the cost of installing smart-grid technology, saying the proposal was effectively identical to one earlier deemed an improper single-issue rate change.

As part of a $274 million rate increase first proposed in 2007, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved a rate rider letting ComEd recoup costs of installing so-called advanced metering infrastructure technology.
