2 Acai Marketers Settle FTC Suits Over Phony News Sites

Law360, New York (March 21, 2012, 6:57 PM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission said Wednesday that it had reached a nearly $1.5 million deal with two online marketers to end lawsuits in Illinois and Michigan claiming they used fake news websites to trick customers into buying acai berry supplements and other purported weight-loss products.

Intermark Communications Inc., known as Copeac, and Coulomb Media Inc. are the latest to settle with the FTC following a crackdown on websites that appear to be legitimate news operations but are actually paid advertisements by the sellers of weight-loss supplements,...
