FTC Officials Say Privacy Codes Won’t Create Safe Harbor

Law360, New York (April 3, 2012, 8:22 PM EDT) -- Federal Trade Commission officials on Tuesday shot down the notion that compliance with new privacy codes could provide a safe harbor for companies, instead urging the industry to follow these guidelines to build favor with consumers and regulators.

In unveiling its long-awaited privacy report March 26, the FTC revealed that it planned to work with the U.S. Department of Commerce in helping to develop the industry “codes of conduct” the White House had proposed in its own privacy report, released in February.
