Contractor Pleads Guilty In $23M Iraq Kickback Scheme

Law360, New York (April 11, 2012, 1:17 PM EDT) -- A former defense contractor on Tuesday pled guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and filing false tax returns for accepting kickbacks as part of a $23 million scheme while managing U.S. Army contracts in Iraq.

Gaines R. Newell Jr. is one of three defendants who were charged with criminal kickback and fraud charges tied to $23 million worth of subcontracts for weapons disposal equipment in Iraq. He allegedly accepted more than $860,000 in kickbacks.
