Export Rein On Satellites Needs Loosening, Departments Urge

Law360, New York (April 19, 2012, 8:29 PM EDT) -- The U.S. departments of State and Defense said Wednesday that the U.S. should loosen export controls on certain commercial satellites and related items, saying they are not purely defense-related and shouldn’t appear on the U.S. Munitions List.

The agencies recommended that communication satellites without classified components and certain remote sensing satellites and related systems, parts and components are more appropriately designated as dual-use items on the Commerce Control List and controlled under the Export Administration Regulations, the report says.
