Brussels Plans Telecom Breakup: Report

Law360 (August 28, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- As the European Commission's review of the telecom sector draws nearer, regulators may be gearing up to force Europe's largest telecommunications companies to break their stranglehold on national markets.

The Commission may force the break-up of national powerhouses, including France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, in an effort to encourage competition in the industry, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

EC Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding has hinted in several recent speeches that she will propose a plan to split major companies.
