EU Pushes To Beef Up Child Internet Safety Laws

Law360, New York (May 2, 2012, 4:37 PM EDT) -- The European Commission on Wednesday unveiled a plan to strengthen online privacy and security protections for children by codifying existing member state safety recommendations and giving parents better tools to ensure their children are adequately protected on the Internet.

Varying national approaches to online privacy mean that children across the European Union have different levels of empowerment and protection online, according to the EC. Businesses therefore struggle to market child-friendly services and products that meet these divergent standards, the commission says.
