DOE Says Bechtel National Owes $15M For Unearned Bonus

Law360, New York (May 2, 2012, 8:21 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Energy was never reimbursed for $15 million of a performance bonus it gave to a contractor Bechtel National Inc. before it discovered Bechtel hadn’t fully checked protective equipment at a nuclear waste treatment site, according to a Tuesday report.

The DOE inspector general said the department paid Bechtel a $30 million performance bonus in 2003, rewarding it for its provision of “black cell” waste processing vessels, enclosed rooms designed to shield workers and equipment from intense radiation at the at the DOE's...
