Popcorn Maker Removes Diacetyl From Flavor Mix

Law360, New York (August 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Popcorn maker Weaver Popcorn Company, Inc. has decided remove a chemical from the butter flavoring on its Pop Weaver brand microwave popcorn because it has been cited as a possible health hazard for plant workers exposed to it.

The chemical, diacetyl, has long been linked to serious lung problems in popcorn factory workers. Last year, a government study determined that inhalation exposure to the butter flavoring ingredient is a risk for an occupational lung disease, sometimes known as “popcorn lung.”
