High Court Asked To Revive $5B Award In Exxon Suit

Law360, New York (August 31, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Fishermen and other Alaskans who sued Exxon Mobil Corp. over the 1989 Valdez tanker spill have asked the Supreme Court to reinstate a $5 billion punitive damages award against the energy giant.

In a cross-petition filed last Tuesday, the plaintiffs urged the High Court to reject Exxon Mobil's writ of certiorari. They added, however, that if the court does hear the case, then it should consider not only whether the Ninth Circuit's $2.5 billion damages award was too large, but also whether it was too small....
