Mystery Solved: Novell Behind Acquisition Of Commerce One Patents

Law360 (May 3, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The mysterious buyer of Commerce One’s sought-after patent portfolio has turned out to be software and computer-services company Novell Corp., according to a published report.

Bruce Lowry, a spokesman for Novell, told the New York Times his company had acquired the patents for defensive reasons and did not plan to seek licensing revenue from them.

He said the company had chosen the secretive approach at the auction “for competitive reasons,” according to the newspaper.
