US Lifts Sanctions On Myanmar, Nominates Ambassador

Law360, New York (May 17, 2012, 10:13 PM EDT) -- The Obama administration announced Thursday that it is lifting sanctions against Myanmar by easing restrictions on the exportation of financial services and investment in Myanmar companies, saying the country has made "significant progress" toward democracy.

The administration also nominated Special Envoy to Myanmar Derek Mitchell, who President Barack Obama said has been instrumental in mending the countries’ relations, as U.S. ambassador to the country. If confirmed, Mitchell will be the first ambassador to Myanmar, also known as Burma, since 1990.
