UnitedHealth Unit Pays $20M To Settle With 37 States

Law360, New York (September 7, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a wide-reaching settlement agreement with 37 states, a division of UnitedHealth Group Inc. has agreed to pay up to $20 million to resolve alleged violations of state law involving payment of claims.

UnitedHealthcare, the company's largest insurance unit, has also agreed to revamp its payment system, by launching a detailed three-year improvement plan, with quarterly and yearly reviews.

If the company fails to meet certain benchmarks, UnitedHealthcare could be subject to an additional $20 million penalty, according to several state insurance regulators who negotiated the...
