Proposed UN Control Would Smother Web, Lawmakers Warn

Law360, New York (May 31, 2012, 3:25 PM EDT) -- A proposal in the United Nations by Russia and China to bring the Internet under greater regulatory control drew fire Thursday from U.S. legislators and regulators, who said such control will stifle innovation and lessen the economic benefits of the Web.

Congressional lawmakers and regulators were united in their opposition to place control of the Internet in the hands of the U.N. at the upcoming World Conference on International Telecommunications, saying that doing so would play into the authoritarian motives of countries supporting the move....
