CMS Failed To Recoup Medicare Overpayments, Audit Says

Law360, New York (May 24, 2012, 7:16 PM EDT) -- The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services failed in recent years to recoup hundreds of millions of dollars in overpayments, but the shortcomings might largely result from legislative factors outside the agency's control, according to a government audit released Thursday.

Of roughly $415 million in excessive reimbursements, CMS managed to claw back less than $85 million, according to the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
