NY Grand Jury Pins Pain Pill Abuse On Drugmakers, Doctors

Law360, New York (May 25, 2012, 5:51 PM EDT) -- A Suffolk County, N.Y., grand jury released a scathing report Thursday blaming the marketing push of drugmakers and the prescription habits of doctors for a national painkiller abuse epidemic, calling for a federal and state regulatory overhaul to combat the problem.

The report, revealed at a press conference by Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota, may boost numerous initiatives at the state level to fight prescription drug abuse, including a bill spearheaded by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to create an Internet prescription tracking system.
