Federal Retirees' SSNs Exposed On Postcards, OPM Says

Law360, New York (May 31, 2012, 6:54 PM EDT) -- Information technology contractor Vangent Inc. last fall accidentally mailed about 3,000 postcards that displayed retired federal employees' Social Security numbers and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management failed to timely report the security breach, according to a report released Wednesday.

The report, released by OPM Inspector General Patrick McFarland, said Vangent in October 2011 unintentionally printed retirees' Social Security numbers on the front of postcards it mailed to government agencies regarding the open enrollment period for the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program.
