Chevron Wants High Court To Lift $18B Ecuadorean Judgment

Law360, New York (June 1, 2012, 7:03 PM EDT) -- Chevron Corp. is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to help it escape an $18 billion environmental judgment by an allegedly corrupt Ecuadorean legal system, saying the Second Circuit erred dramatically in refusing to let the company block collection efforts.

The oil and gas giant on May 25 petitioned the high court to overturn a January ruling out of the Second Circuit, which said Chevron cannot use New York's courts to avoid paying pollution-related damages. At issue in the case is environmental harm to the Amazon rainforest...
