Global Airlines Say EU Emission Rules Could Spark Trade War

Law360, New York (June 12, 2012, 2:17 PM EDT) -- An international trade association representing 230 global airlines criticized Europe's recently enacted regulations aimed at reducing aviation emissions on Tuesday, saying the rules intensified global political tensions and could lead to a global trade war.

Leaders of the International Air Transport Association warned during an annual conference that Europe's controversial Emissions Trading System regulations — a cap-and-trade program that took effect Jan. 1 — could spark a worldwide trade war, but urged countries to seek a global solution through the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization. ...
