Chevron, Unocal Settle Gasoline Patent Probe With FTC

Law360, New York (June 9, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Chevron Corp. and Unocal Corp. have reached a tentative agreement with the Federal Trade Commission to settle charges that Unocal abused patents to gain an illegal monopoly over a California-mandated formula for less-polluting gas.

The FTC claims that Unocal hid from the California Air Resources Board two key facts the board needed to know as it pondered gasoline formulations proposed to meet the state's automobile exhaust standards.
