US Offshore Leasing Plan Opens Gulf Waters, Limits Arctic

Law360, New York (June 28, 2012, 6:48 PM EDT) -- The Obama administration on Thursday rolled out its new five-year offshore oil and gas leasing program, opening new areas of the Gulf of Mexico and offering companies limited access to Alaska's coastal waters.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar unveiled the plan, which will run from 2012 to 2017, saying it would make resource-rich regions of the gulf and the Arctic available for new development while adopting a "targeted" approach to leasing to protect environmentally sensitive areas.
