E.U. Probes Telecom Standards Body For Patent Abuse

Law360, New York (June 14, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Commission is investigating the European Union’s main telecommunications standards body to determine whether high-tech companies are exploiting the agency’s patent rules for financial gain, according to a published report.

Commission officials are concerned that existing European Telecommunications Standards Institute regulations allow companies to turn their patented technologies into universal industry standards without telling rival groups about their patent claims, the Financial Times reported.
