GOP Bill Would Revive Pre-Deepwater Offshore Lease Plan

Law360, New York (July 16, 2012, 8:30 PM EDT) -- U.S. Senate Republicans floated legislation Friday that would replace the Obama administration’s five-year plan for offshore oil and gas leasing with their own program effectively duplicating a plan proposed prior to the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Introduced by Sens. David Vitter, R-La., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., S. 3383 would make most of the Outer Continental Shelf available to oil and gas leasing, opening currently off-limits areas of coastal Alaska and massive tracts of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans to energy production.
